Our Fabric

Silk
At Coral by Seema, fabric is not just a medium, it’s a message. Every garment begins with silk. But not just any silk. We work almost exclusively with 100% pure mulberry silk, a protein-based, organic material that breathes, drapes and absorbs natural dyes with an elegance nothing else can replicate. It’s soft to the touch, luminous in light, and forever timeless in feel.
Our silk is sourced directly from South India, where generations of artisans and farmers have worked with care, not chemicals. The silk we use is untreated, uncoated, and free from synthetic finishes, allowing it to hold natural colour like memory.
We don’t dye the fabric and then cut it. We first imagine the collection, the story, the silhouettes, the textures. Only then do we cut the fabric with intention, piece by piece, and dye it to match the mood of each garment. Years of experimentation have led us to a palette of seven signature botanical colours, each drawn from nature’s quiet leftovers: onion skins, madder roots, henna, Sappan wood, pomegranate rinds, and marigold petals. We gather what has already fallen, what has already been forgotten. Many a times, each extract is used multiple times, and in multiple ways. The first dip may yield a deep rust. The second, a soft peach. The third, a whisper of blush. This is how we honour the material, by letting it offer everything it has. Some of our raw ingredients are foraged by hand, from gardens, roadsides, temple floors. Others are procured from certified natural dye vendors from different corners of India. In either case, we use only what is kind to skin, to soil, and to the soul. The result is not just a garment, but a rhythm between fabric and earth where nothing is wasted, and everything holds meaning.

Zero waste textile
As a 100% zero-waste brand, we’ve innovatively upcycled scraps into exclusive designs, proving that sustainability can be luxurious. Early December 2022, I was sitting amidst the studio in a plethora of scraps that were left over from our collections made with hand dyed natural fabrics. Despite having utilized the 'bigger scraps' to create exclusive and unparalleled designs, it pained me to watch the minute and seemingly 'useless' bits being swept away every day at the studio.
As a result, I began collecting these scraps in boxes and packets, with the determination to one day find a way to salvage them. The outcome was a range of unique and unmatched pieces, a beautiful blend of natural colors, almost akin to art. Crafted with a combination of skill and time-intensive labor, it was a gratifying and satisfying experience to utilize every last bit of waste.
